EXPOSITION: COCOON SCULPTURE – EARLY WORK

Cocoon sculptures are made by building a structure of welded steel rods and then spraying polyvinyl chloride mixed with a webbing agent across the rods. The webbing agent causes the polyvinyl chloride to come out of the spray nozzle in long web-like filaments that catch across the steel rods and span the open spaces. One needs an industrial size compressor to attain the necessary air pressure. The building of the webbed form is controlled by the angle of the nozzle. Once the form one wants has been attained, one then sprays pure white pigmented polyvinyl chloride, without the webbing agent, over the form, creating a flexible but very strong ‘cocoon’ sculpture.
